Next-Gen Xbox Likely to Launch in 2027, AMD Confirms Custom Chip Development Is on Track

The next-generation Xbox console appears firmly on track for a 2027 launch, according to comments from chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). During its latest quarterly earnings call, AMD revealed that development of the custom chipset designed for the upcoming Xbox is “progressing well,” aligning with a planned release timeline in 2027.

While Microsoft has yet to officially announce the console or its launch window, AMD’s remarks add weight to earlier reports and industry leaks pointing toward a 2027 debut.

AMD’s Role in the Next Console Generation

AMD is set to play a major role in the upcoming console cycle. The company is developing custom chips not only for the next-gen Xbox, but also for Sony’s PlayStation 6 and Valve’s Steam Machine. This places AMD at the center of the tenth generation of gaming consoles.

During AMD’s Q4 FY2025 earnings call, CEO Lisa Su referenced the planned timelines for multiple upcoming platforms. Her prepared remarks suggested that the next Xbox remains on schedule for a 2027 release, a statement later highlighted by industry outlet GamesBeat.

A PC-Console Hybrid Xbox?

Early reports suggest that Microsoft’s next console could be a PC/console hybrid, potentially running a version of Windows and offering deeper integration with the PC gaming ecosystem. This would align with Microsoft’s broader strategy of unifying Xbox and Windows gaming platforms.

Initial leaks also placed the next Xbox launch alongside Sony’s PlayStation 6 in 2027. However, subsequent industry chatter has hinted that rising hardware and manufacturing costs could push next-gen consoles further out. AMD’s latest comments now suggest that, at least from a silicon standpoint, development remains on track.

Steam Machine Coming First

Valve has already confirmed that its upcoming Steam Machine, another PC/console hybrid powered by AMD hardware and running SteamOS, is set to launch in early 2026. While an exact release date has not been revealed, it will likely arrive before both the next Xbox and PS6.

What Microsoft and Sony Are Saying

As of now, Microsoft and Sony have not officially confirmed launch timelines for their next-generation consoles. Still, AMD’s public statements provide one of the clearest indicators yet that the next Xbox is targeting 2027 — assuming no major shifts in hardware costs or market conditions.

The Road to the Next Console Era

With AMD’s custom chip development progressing smoothly and multiple next-gen platforms in the pipeline, the gaming industry appears to be steadily moving toward the next console generation. While official announcements are still pending, all signs currently point to 2027 as a pivotal year for Xbox and console gaming as a whole.
