Nowadays Canada has invited 2,000 candidates to apply for permanent residence in the latest Express Entry draw on August 3, 2022. Express Entry is one of Canada’s most popular immigration routes for qualified newcomers.

Invitations are sent to candidates who score at least 533 points in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). There is no set schedule for this draw, which means Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) candidates are eligible to be invited.

The minimum CRS requirement for this draw is 9 points less than the previous draw on July 20. In addition, this draw has seen an increase of 250 invites compared to the 1,750 candidates who received an invitation to apply (ITA) in the previous draw.

Since the resumption of draws for all programs on July 6, 5,250 Express Entry candidates have received ITAs. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has suspended these draws for more than 18 months and is only inviting candidates who are eligible for permanent residency under the CEC or the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).

Canada plans to welcome 55,900 permanent residents through Express Entry in 2022, a number that will rise sharply to 111,500 by the end of 2024.

Expired PGWP holders will now be able to apply for a new open work permit.

Thousands of Postgraduate Work Permit (PGWP) holders have had their work permit status expired due to the suspension of invitations to Express Entry CEC candidates between September 2021 and July 2022. Without an invitation from CEC, they were unable to apply for an Open Bridge Work Permit while waiting for IRCC to process their permanent residence application. Yesterday, IRCC announced extraordinary measures to allow expired PGWP holders to extend their Open Work Permit status for a further 18 months. The measure is designed to ease the transition to permanent residency for these applicants and allow them to continue working while they wait.

Distance learning now temporarily eligible for Express Entry

For the past two years, some international students have been forced to complete their studies online due to pandemic restrictions. In response, IRCC recently announced that students who completed an online education program in Canada between March 2020 and August 2022 can now use these certificates as part of their overall CRS score. This means that students can include the education they have completed online as part of their educational certificate by uploading their online Express Entry profile.

The measure will only be temporary as pandemic restrictions are eased around the world. If 50% of the educational program is completed through distance learning, students are generally ineligible for CRS credits toward a certificate of education. However, if you earned a Canadian degree, diploma or certificate and completed a partial degree or apprenticeship program between March 2020 and August 2022, you are now eligible for Canadian education credit upon full completion of your program:

  • through distance learning;
  • from outside Canada; any one
  • through part-time study.

Candidates already in the Express Entry pool may have received a letter from IRCC advising them to update their educational information in their online profile. According to the letter, there are three new questions in the educational history section that must be answered or candidates may have lower CRS scores.

These questions ask candidates how much face-to-face study, study in Canada and full-time study have been completed to qualify. When this letter was published, IRCC advised entrants to update their profiles by August 2 to ensure they maintain their CRS scores and qualify for the current draw.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is the application management system for three Canadian immigration programs: Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates in the Express Entry pool are already eligible for at least one of these programs.

Express Entry ranks candidate profiles using a points-based system, the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The highest scoring candidates will receive an invitation to apply (ITA) and can then apply for permanent residency.

After a candidate submits an application, an IRCC officer reviews the application and makes a decision. The officer will request biometric information and may schedule an interview or request additional documentation.

Once approved, the applicant will receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residency (COPR). After that, the final step is to complete the landing process and officially become a permanent resident of Canada.
