How the visuals and effects in Avatar 2 are being created

The motion-capture tech in the Avatar sequel was explicitly designed to cleanly capture actors’ movements in underwater. Director James Cameron told the Collider that the new technology took more than a

 one year for the new system to overcome the optical problems that cameras face when trying to film in the under the water; Director James Cameron said that the interaction between air and water creates a “moving mirror [thats] reflects all the dots and markers” that actors wear to look like as part of motion-capture suits.

In the movie, CGI was obviously used to render the ornithopters, giant sandworms, and other impossible shots which is not possible without CGI or VFX.
