Apple is reportedly planning to use OLED displays on all iPhone models by 2025.

According to Japan’s Nikkei newspaper, the California-based tech giant Apple is set to completely switch its iPhone lineup to organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays by 2025, representing a major departure from its current use of liquid crystal displays (LCDs).

A report from Nikkei newspaper, citing anonymous sources, reveals that Apple’s full transition to OLED screens will significantly impact its current suppliers. Japanese companies Sharp Corp and Japan Display, which have been major providers of LCD screens for Apple, are expected to be phased out of the supply chain for iPhones. According to the report, these companies will no longer be involved in display production for Apple’s smartphones, as they do not produce OLED screens on a large scale.

The report also notes that, in anticipation of this shift, Apple has begun ordering OLED panels for its upcoming iPhone SE model. These orders have been placed with China’s BOE Technology and South Korea’s LG Display, indicating a move towards diversifying its display technology supplier base.

This shift marks a significant change from a decade ago when Sharp and Japan Display together held a 70 percent share of the iPhone display market. In recent years, their role has been confined to supplying LCD screens for the iPhone SE, as Apple has gradually adopted OLED technology for its premium models, starting with the iPhone X in 2017.

Apple’s embrace of OLED technology now extends beyond iPhones, with the company introducing OLED displays in its latest iPad Pro models, launched in May this year. This move indicates a broader commitment to incorporating OLED technology across its entire range of devices.

This strategic shift highlights the growing industry preference for OLED technology, known for its ability to produce richer colors and sharper contrasts, making it especially suitable for high-definition video content.
